Quark Explains Assets and Acquisitions to Klingons

Is it any wonder that the Klingon Empire and Fereginar were never at war?

DS9 Returning Adversaries PT 2: Sloan, Eddington, and Gowron

These guys aren't villains in the classic sense, but they are men driven by their own ambitions and agendas. One sees himself as the savior of the Federation, one the savior of colonists wronged by the Federation, and one striving for his own glory above that of the Empire.

Luther Sloan is a member of a secretive organization, one so secret that even the Federation can't, or won't, acknowledge. It's Section 31 and it's soldier pays DS9 a visit, seeking out traitors. In "Inquisition," he grills Dr. Bashir about his time spent in captivity by the Founders and whether or not his loyalties have turned.

But his ulterior motive was to get Bashir working for Section 31 as a spy. One of the reasons, we learn in "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges," was to develop a bio weapon to use against a Romulan candidate for the Senate. He seals his own fate in "Extreme Measures" by committing suicide when Bashir turns the tables and entraps him to reveal a cure for a plague Section 31 created to destroy the Changelings.

Michael Eddington was a security officer stationed on DS9 after it was revealed the Founders were like Odo---changelings. Eddington and Odo learned to trust each other in the beginning, but later we find Eddington was secretly working for the Maquis. In "For the Cause," intercepted replicators enroute to the Dominion are then stolen by him and Maquis sympathizers.

Sisko hunts down Eddington after a long game of cat and mouse. In "For the Uniform," Eddington, after having attacked several Cardassian colonies in an act of war, finally surrenders to Sisko and the Federation after Sisko tells him he's about to launch bio weapons torpedoes on Maquis colonists.

In "A Blaze of Glory," Eddington meets his fate when he and Sisko are forced to stop cloaked missiles enroute to Cardassia being launched by the Maquis. They end up at an outpost where Eddington dies heroically, battling an attacking troop of Jem'Hadar.

In "The Way of the Warrior," Gowron is head of the Klingon High Council and he orders crews to invade Cardassian colonies and take them over in an act of war. Before Cardassia became allies with the Dominion under the dictatorship of Gul Dukat, Gowron is suspicious that members of Starfleet headquarters and the Cardassian civilian leadership have been infiltrated and taken over by Changelings.

He gets pissed when Worf refuses to join him on his quest to invade Cardassia and strips Worf of his title and a place in the Empire. He tells Worf he will have nothing to show for turning his back on him (Gowron, not the Empire) and Worf tells him "except my honor."

Later, the Empire reluctantly rejoins the Federation when Cardassia becomes a friend to, and under the protection of, the Dominion. But that doesn't stop this Klingon egomaniac from trying to gain complete control, not just for self indulgence, but out of spite and jealousy of his rival Martok. His fate is sealed when Worf calls him on his unwise and reckless decisions that had cost Kronos several thousand men and ships in unwinnable invasions. In "Tacking to the Wind," they engage in a duel with Worf coming out the victor and Martok taking the mantle of Leader of the High Council.

Star Trek DS9---Tacking Into the Wind scene Worf vs. Gowron

This is a great scene from "Tacking Into the Wind" in which Worf calls out Gowron's corrupt use of power that is depleting their warships and killing warriors for political spite. "You are without wisdom or honor" he tells Gowron. Them's fighting words and they duel until one man remains. Worf becomes the new Chancellor but hands the reins over to his good friend and honorable warrior Martok.

Best of Star Trek: Deep Space 9---The Way of the Warrior

"The Way of the Warrior" is the first episode of season 4 and brings many changes to the series. 1) The Obsidian Order has been overthrown by civilians who now run the Cardassian government. 2) Lt. Commander Worf is brought aboard to handle a group of Klingons who reside on the station to help the Federation fight the Dominion (or so it seems at the beginning). 3) The Klingon Empire withdraws from the Khitomer Treaty. 4) The Federation must now join forces with the Cardassians to fight the Klingons who have invaded the Cardassian homeworld.

In season 3, the Defiant is sent on a wild goose chase to the Tzenkhethi border by an admiral who claims the inhabitants are plotting an attack on the Federation. Turns out it was just a ploy to start a war and put the Federation right in the middle of it in order to weaken them and make them more vulnerable to a takeover by the Dominion. The admiral himself was actually a Changeling who tells Odo before he is destroyed that it's already too late---they are everywhere.

Now Gowron, leader of the Klingon high council, is suspicious that the Federation is being taken over by Changelings and that the Dominion is the cause of the civil unrest taking place on Cardassia. Worf learns from a confidential source the the Empire's true intent is to invade Cardassia and take over the government and destroy it's civilian leaders who Gowron believes are actually Changelings.

Benjamin Sisko was promoted to the rank of Captain in the last episode and takes his crew on the Defiant to stop the Klingons from invading Cardassia. This puts him in a situation of possibly violating the peace treaty between the Empire and the Federation. Warning the Cardassians would only escalate the situation.

In one highlight of the episode, Garak is brought into the ready room to take measurements of Sisko for a new suit as the crew discusses the Klingon plans for the invasion. Sisko tells Garak to not forget the waist measurements. "I think I have everything I need" says Garak who in turn messages Gul Dukat about the warships heading his way.

Later, the Defiant  is successful in entering Cardassian space and beaming aboard the Cardassian civilian council members and warps back to DS9 with Klingon battle cruisers in pursuit. The Cardassians are blood tested to find out if any of them are Changelings. They all test negative.

The Klingon ships attack the space station and there are casualties on both sides. Many Klingons manage to invade the station when DS9's shield defenses are breached but they are outnumbered and killed or captured.

It ends with Gowron telling Sisko that they will not forget, or forgive, what the Federation has done this day. The Klingons are forced to temporarily withdraw. The Federation has sent reinforcements and the damaged Klingon ships are no match. Worf also reminds Gowron that destroying an empire to win a battle is no victory.

The space station crew later learns the Klingons are refusing to give up the districts conquered by them on Cardassia.

This was a two hour episode written by Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe. It sent the series into a tail spin of fighting a formidable force that had been an ally for many years. It may have also offered an even greater tactical advantage to the Dominion, having the Klingon Empire as an ally---but we shall see.

The episode also brings on board an old familiar face--that of The Enterprise Chief of Security Lt. Commander Worf. Sisko remarks to Worf that he was sorry to hear about what happened to the Enterprise. I assume he's talking about the incident from "Generations." Since the ship was no longer in service and Sisko needed an experience officer who best understands the Klingons, what better way to introduce Worf to DS9.

There's also the side story of Worf being conflicted between loyalty to his people and loyalty to Starfleet. Odo understands this dilemma all too well and tells Worf he had better make up his mind soon about telling Sisko what he knows regarding the Klingon's true reason for being on the station before it's too late.
